Opening Prayer

We meet in the presence of God.  We commit ourselves to work in penitence ands faith for reconciliation between the nations, that all people may together live in freedom, justice and peace.

We pray for all who, in bereavement, disability and pain, continue to suffer the consequences of fighting and terror.

We remember with thanksgiving and sorrow those whose lives, in world wars and conflicts past and present, have been given and taken away.

Act of Remembrance

Let us remember before God and commend to his sure keeping: those who have died for their country in conflict; those whom we knew, and whose memory we treasure; and all who have lived and died in the service of humanity.

They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.  Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.  At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.

The Kohima Epitaph

When you go home tell them of us and say: ‘For your tomorrow, we gave our today’.

Isaiah 2:2-4

In the days to come the mountain of the LORD’s house will be the highest of the mountains.  It will be lifted above the hills; peoples will stream to it.  Many nations will go and say, “Come, let’s go up to the LORD’s mountain,  to the house of Jacob’s God so that he may teach us his ways and we may walk in God’s paths.”   Instruction will come from Zion; the LORD’s word from Jerusalem.  God will judge between the nations, and settle disputes of mighty nations. Then they will beat their swords into iron ploughs and their spears into pruning tools.  Nation will not take up sword against nation; they will no longer learn how to make war

From the Holy Quran, Surah Al-Hujurat (49) V 10, 11 & 13

The believers are but a single brotherhood.  So make peace and reconciliation between your two contending brothers, and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy.

O you who believe, let not some men among you laugh at others, perhaps they may be better than you.   Nor let some women laugh at others, perhaps they may be better than you.   And do not insult one another and do not call each other by offensive names, disobedience is a ‘bad name’ after faith.   And whoever does not repent, and then it is those who are the wrongdoers

O mankind!   We created you from a single pair of a male (Adam) and a female (Eve) and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know each other.    Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is he who is the most righteous of you.  Surely Allah has full knowledge over everything and he is well acquainted

Matthew 5:1-9

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.  He said:
‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
