The newcomers look grown-up in their new uniforms
It's big, it's busy and it's noisy - secondary school. This week hundreds of pupils have moved on to a new school, complete with smart uniform and packed pencil cases. But what's it really like?

Newcomers in 7H at Nicholas Breakspear RC School in St Albans have taken some time out from their new timetable to share their experiences, in words and pictures.

Here's a selection of their thoughts on their first day, their worries and the reality.

Filling in their new timetables
"Before I came here,
To Nicholas Breakspear,
I felt so happy to be joining a new school!
I just couldn't wait,
I daren't be late,
I didn't even have to pay a bus toll!
My biggest fear though,
I just didn't show,
I was scared of being bullied.
The best thing is my locker,
To store all my things,
And the clock going tocker-tick tick-tocker.
Pasquale's drew his new friends on PCs The worst thing are the stairs,
Because I keep tripping over them,
But then again - who cares?
After all,
I've started my new school!
If I had to sum it up in one word,
I'd say it was my fate,
But I think this school is absolutely GREAT!"

Hard at Work! Sammy: "Before I came to this school, I felt a bit scared that I wouldn't make any friends but as well there was something else that was scary. When I came here for my first day I was a bit worries that I might get bullied and called names - but I didn't. My biggest fear was that I might miss the bus home. The best thing is that my sister is here to look after me if something happens."

Filling in their new timetables David: "When I came to this school, I felt nervous and scared. My biggest worry is getting to my class but the best thing about this school is that you meet new teachers."

James: "Before I came to this school I felt excited but also very nervous. My biggest worry was getting lost in the school as it is a lot bigger than my primary school. The worst part though was going up the stairs - three storeys to our form room! The best thing is my locker to
keep all my things. In one word, this school is great!"
