2003: St Albans is a rich patchwork ... |
Of history and buildings.
Of culture and art. Of markets and museums. Of pubs and restaurants. Of quiet gardens and bustling shopping squares. Of churches and places of worship. But above all, of people - young, old and of many different origins, starting when the Romans invaded. So what better way to celebrate Charter Weekend than by stitching it all together into a magnificent patchwork quilt of many colours !?
More than two dozen local
schools and women's clubs including the Catholic Women's League (CWL) all
produced 20cm squares of St Albans scenes to be stitched together into a
giant quilt, which was displayed (pictured below) over Charter Weekend.St Alban and Stephen CWL received their invitation quite late, but nevertheless, five women decided they wanted to be involved and to take on the challenge. They felt that the standard sights in St Albans would covered so they chose their own church. Ann Vollborth did the sketch (pictured to the right) and then they searched their fabric stores for suitable materials. The group had done cross stitch and patchwork before but nothing like this. "It wasn't until we looked at the photographs that we realised how many different details there were. The hardest part was the statue".
Anne said "It was difficulty working with such small pieces of
material but the group thoroughly enjoyed it"A group from the Abbey led by Jo Woodworth spent many hours sewing the squares together. Jo said "It's my first quilt so it's a bit daunting, but I have friends who are more expert to help me." Additional contributions came from some of the schools in and around St Albans It's possible to order commemorative cards too. They're A6 size and a pack of five costs just £3.50 including envelopes - please contact Jo Woodworth on 01727 840582 or Anne Green on 837511 if you're interested |
